Srinagar Police arrests two in Facebook Medical Donation fraud case
Srinagar, May 31 (KINS): In a swift and decisive operation, Srinagar Police have busted an online fraud racket involving a fake medical donation appeal circulated via Facebook.
The case was initiated on May 30, 2025, after Police Station Nowhatta received a written complaint from Muneer Ahmad Misger, a resident of Mughal Masjid, Nowhatta. The complainant alleged that an unidentified individual, posing as a journalist, had uploaded a photograph of his sister along with a fabricated medical appeal, fraudulently soliciting public donations for a non-existent surgery.
An FIR (No. 21/2025) was registered under Sections 318(2) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigation was launched.
During the investigation, the Facebook page administrator was identified as Mohammad Lateef Lone, a resident of Tujan, Pulwama. Another accused, Amir Yousuf Khan, originally from Bandipora and currently residing in Gulab Bagh, Zakoora, was also identified for providing the bank account used to receive the fraudulent donations. Both individuals have been arrested, and further investigation is underway to identify others involved in the scam.
Police have urged the public and media to refrain from sharing or engaging with the misleading post and to report similar suspicious fundraising activities to the nearest police station.(KINS)
