Army Chief and AWWA President Pledge Organ Donation, Strengthening AORTA Campaign

Srinagar, Aug 21: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi and his wife Mrs. Sunita Dwivedi, President of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), pledged to donate their organs at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, on August 20, giving a major boost to the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval & Transplantation Authority (AORTA).

The initiative, led by Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), aims to raise awareness and inspire the Armed Forces community to spearhead the nation’s organ donation movement. The Indian Army has already set a record, with over 26,000 personnel pledging their organs during a single campaign.

Speaking at the occasion, General Dwivedi described organ donation as “a service to humanity and an extension of the Armed Forces’ spirit of sacrifice and courage.” He urged service personnel and their families to lead by example and support the noble cause.

In recognition of the efforts of healthcare workers, the Army Chief also presented Chief’s Recommendation Cards to three frontline staff engaged in organ transplant care, including a housekeeper who played a vital role in maintaining hygiene for patients—an acknowledgement of the Army Medical Corps’ ethos of compassion in service.

The event also paid tribute to donor families, who were felicitated for their extraordinary courage and generosity in giving the “gift of life” through organ donation.(KINS)
