Heavy rains forecast in J&K; MeT warns of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides

Srinagar, Sept 1 (KINS): The Meteorological Department has issued a fresh advisory warning of “heavy to very heavy rainfall” across several districts of Jammu and Kashmir starting late tonight, cautioning that the spell may trigger cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas.

According to the MeT as per news agency KINS, brief spells of light to intense showers are expected in parts of J & K this afternoon, followed by fresh heavy rainfall in some districts of Jammu division late tonight and early tomorrow (Sept 2).

Between September 2 and 3, weather is likely to remain generally cloudy with one or two spells of light to moderate rain and thunder at many places. However, “heavy to very heavy rainfall” is expected over Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur, and Reasi, while moderate to heavy showers are likely in Doda, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban, Kishtwar, Anantnag, and Kulgam, mainly during the late night of Sept 2 and early morning of Sept 3 till late afternoon.

Officials warned that this may lead to a rise in water levels of rivers and streams, urging the public to stay away from water bodies, nallahs, river embankments, and unstable structures.

Looking ahead, the department said there is a possibility of rain and thundershowers at isolated places across J&K from September 4 to 7.(KINS)
