Srinagar, Dec 3 (KINS): On World Disability Day, a group of specially-abled individuals held a protest demonstration at Press Colony here on Tuesday, terming the occasion a “Black Day” due to the lack of support and facilities for persons with disabilities (PwDs) in Jammu and Kashmir.

The protesters, organized under various disability rights organizations, voiced their grievances about the unfulfilled promises made by the government regarding their welfare.

Holding placards and banners, they highlighted the pressing issues they face, including lack of accessibility, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, and delays in implementing disability welfare schemes.

“We are treated as second-class citizens. Despite repeated assurances from authorities, our issues remain unaddressed,” one of the protestors told news agency KINS.

Another participant stated the need for infrastructure development to ensure accessibility in public spaces. “We struggle daily due to the absence of ramps, elevators, and other facilities meant for us,” he said.

The protesters demanded immediate implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and appealed to the government to establish special employment schemes, provide monthly disability allowances, and improve medical aid for PwDs.

Despite their peaceful demonstration, the participants lamented the lack of attention from the authorities. “Until our rights are recognized and our issues resolved, we will continue to observe this day as a Black Day,” they said.

World Disability Day is observed annually to promote understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. (KINS)
