Demand for papier machie products surge ahead of Christmas

Srinagar, Dec 19 (KINS): Paper machie artisans across Kashmir are working round the clock as demand for traditional paper maché products has surged ahead of Christmas celebrations.
Artisans in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley say orders for decorative items such as Christmas ornaments, stars, bells, bowls, lampshades and gift articles have increased significantly, prompting them to extend their working hours to meet deadlines.
“This is one of the busiest times of the year for us. Traders from outside Kashmir place bulk orders ahead of Christmas, and we are trying our best to complete them on time,” a paper machie artisan in Srinagar Bashir Ahmad told news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).
The centuries-old craft, known for its intricate designs and vibrant colours, remains a major source of livelihood for hundreds of families in Kashmir. Many artisans said that the festive season brings much-needed income after months of slow business.
Traders said that demand has come not only from local markets but also from metropolitan cities and online platforms, where Kashmiri paper maché items are popular as eco-friendly and handcrafted décor pieces.
However, artisans also flagged challenges such as rising raw material costs and limited access to larger markets. They urged the government to provide better marketing support, exhibition opportunities and financial assistance to help sustain the craft.
Despite the challenges, the festive rush has brought renewed hope to the artisan community, with workshops buzzing day and night as Christmas approaches. (KINS)
