CM Omar Abdullah rededicates renovated JAK LI war memorial on 78th raising day

Srinagar, April 15 (KINS): Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday rededicated the renovated War Memorial of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAK LI) at the Regimental Centre, marking the regiment’s 78th Raising Day.

The ceremony was held with solemnity, paying tribute to the regiment’s rich legacy that began in the aftermath of Partition. The JAK LI, which initially started as a volunteer force, brought together patriots from diverse backgrounds united by a shared commitment to defend the nation during the early days of conflict.

Over the years, the regiment has earned a distinguished reputation for its role in operations across difficult terrains and counter-insurgency missions. It is among the most decorated infantry regiments, with honours including one Param Vir Chakra, three Ashok Chakras, ten Maha Vir Chakras, and numerous other gallantry awards. The regiment has also played key roles in major conflicts, including the 1971 and 1999 wars.

The newly renovated War Memorial stands as a tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty. Inscribed with the names of fallen heroes, it reflects the regiment’s motto, “Balidanam Vir Lakshanam” (Sacrifice is the virtue of the brave), and serves as an enduring source of inspiration.

Addressing the gathering, Omar Abdullah paid homage to the soldiers and highlighted the deep connection between the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the regiment. He said the memorial symbolises the courage, sacrifice, and patriotism of the soldiers and reaffirmed commitment to honour their legacy.

The event was also attended by Farooq Abdullah and senior Army officials, including Lt Gen Manish Erry, Colonel of the JAK LI Regiment, along with other dignitaries. The ceremony featured wreath-laying and a guard of honour at the memorial.

The occasion concluded with tributes to the fallen soldiers, reinforcing respect for the regiment’s enduring legacy of service and sacrifice.(KINS)
