INTACH proposes collaborating with JU to protect Jammu’s heritage
Jammu July 17: INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage), Jammu Chapter, has submitted a proposal to Prof. Umesh Rai, Hon’ble Vice‑Chancellor of the University of Jammu, to establish an Art, Craft & Photos Museum dedicated to Jammu’s heritage. The INTACH Chapter members presented the detailed proposal and sought to explore collaboration opportunities.
The proposed museum will document, preserve and display the region’s tangible, intangible and natural heritage through curated collections of local crafts, archival photographs and material culture. Beyond exhibitions, the project envisions community outreach and youth‑education programmes to engage students, artisans and local communities, strengthening heritage awareness across Jammu and neighbouring areas.
The submission was made by Convener S. M. Sahni, Additional Co‑Convenor Dr. Satwant Singh Rissam, and Coordinator Heritage Tourism Arvind Kotwal. The proposal is supported by local experts including environmentalist Prof. Anil Raina, Kirpal Singh, former curator of the Dogra Art Museum at Mubarak Mandi, and Suman Gupta, a world-renowned painter.
INTACH Jammu Chapter believes the University of Jammu’s academic strengths and community reach make it an ideal partner to realise a museum that will function as a centre for research, education and public engagement. Key objectives include preserving and displaying local crafts and archival photographs; running workshops, school programmes and outreach to involve youth and practising artisans; supporting research and documentation of Jammu’s heritage; and promoting community participation alongside sustainable heritage tourism.
