‘Why is Congress afraid of a clean voter list?’
Akhnoor, Oct 30 (KINS):;Jammu and Kashmir BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma (CA) on Friday criticised the Congress party, accusing it of attempting to create political instability and confusion in the country out of frustration over its declining public support.
Sat Sharma, along with MLA Mohan Lal Bhagat, District Prabhari Vinay Gupta, District President Kuldeep Sharma and other BJP leaders, addressed a gathering of prominent citizens organised by the BJP’s Akhnoor district unit under the theme “Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao” (Save Democracy, Eliminate Anarchy).
Several prominent citizens attended the programme, including S. Gurvinder Singh, President of the Gurudwara Committee, S. Rashpaul Singh, S. Jitender Singh, S. Swarn Singh, S. Amrik Singh, former Sarpanch Vijay Sharma, Bablu Sharma, Kishori Sharma, Virender Kumar, Gullu Ram and Babu Ram.
Addressing the gathering, Sat Sharma said that Congress leaders, particularly Rahul Gandhi, were increasingly relying on misinformation, baseless allegations and political confrontation to regain lost public support.
He accused the Congress of placing its hunger for power above national interests and undermining public confidence in constitutional institutions. He said that the party repeatedly questions democratic institutions whenever their functioning does not suit its political interests.
Strongly defending the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Sat Sharma said that maintaining an accurate, transparent and clean voter list was essential for free and fair elections.
Questioning the Congress’s opposition to the exercise, he asked why the party was against identifying duplicate, deceased, shifted and otherwise ineligible voters while ensuring that every eligible citizen retained the right to vote.
“Does Congress believe that it cannot win people’s trust and secure votes through democratic means? Why does it become uncomfortable whenever electoral rolls are scrutinised? Is its political survival dependent on questionable entries and bogus voting?” he asked.
Sat Sharma further pointed out that intensive revisions of electoral rolls had been conducted several times in the past, including during earlier Congress-led governments. He cited revision exercises conducted during 1952–56, 1957, 1961, 1965–66, 1983–84, 1987–89, 1992–95 and 2002–04.
He said that a process recognised as a legitimate electoral exercise in the past should not become controversial merely because the present government supports its implementation.
MLA Mohan Lal Bhagat said that Congress was attempting to create controversy around constitutional processes instead of addressing public concerns and presenting a constructive political alternative. He said democracy required a responsible opposition rather than repeated attempts to create confusion and confrontation.
Kuldeep Sharma said that the intellectual community had an important role in countering misinformation and encouraging informed public participation. He stressed that transparent electoral processes and respect for democratic institutions were essential for protecting the country’s democratic framework.(KINS)
