After Jammu attack, Centre prepares new rules for drone use

New Delhi July 2,

After the drone attack at Jammu Air Force Station on June 27, the Ministry of Civil Aviation is in the process of preparing new rules to regulate drone use in India. The new set of rules are expected to be published around August 15 for public consultation.

Sources within the Ministry of Civil Aviation told that these rules will be an upgradation of the existing Unmanned Aircraft System Rules that were notified earlier this year to regulate drone use.

The new rules are expected to explore ‘Made in India’ anti-drone solutions that will detect and effectively neutralise rogue drones like the ones that orchestrated the blasts in Jammu on June 27 and the drones subsequently sighted in the region.

These revised rules were presented before Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Puri on June 29 at his residence to take stock of the situation in Jammu and the general security preparedness.

As per sources, the new rules are more or less ready but some work still remains to be done. The approximate deadline for publication of the new rules is August 15.

On June 27, low-flying drones were used to drop two improvised explosive devices (IED) at the Jammu Air Force Station. This was probably the first drone attack on any defence establishment in the country. The explosions rocked the high security technical area of the station at night and two Indian Air Force personnel sustained minor injuries as a result.
