No shortage of essential items in Kashmir: Admin

Srinagar, April 5 (KINS): Amid coronavirus scare, authorities have appealed people not to panic and said there was enough stock available of essential commodities in Kashmir.

Like other parts, Kashmir is under lockdown for last over two weeks. There are apprehensions that valley may be short of essentials as Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was closed for several days due to land sliding.

A senior official said there was no shortage of essentials in Kashmir. “Medicines are also available. People should pay heed to rumors,” the official said.

Director, Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, (FCSCA), Bashir Ahmad also asked people not to panic. “We have enough stock available for at least eight weeks. We have rice, gas, and other essential communities available,” he told Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).

There were recently reports that lockdown, coupled with the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway for a week has created scarcity of essential commodities in Kashmir.

Due to the closure of the 264-Km highway, the only road link between Kashmir and the rest of the country, hundreds of trucks carrying essential commodities to the Valley and those returning remained stranded due to multiple landslides.

However an official of Traffic Department said all these trucks have reached to Kashmir. “Only trucks carrying essential commodities are allowed to ply on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway,” the official told KINS.

Srinagar district administration has home delivered ration to more than 75000 families across the district and 1.85 laky families are being delivered in the coming days.

“Let’s recognize efforts of these soldiers on foot & wheels helping every1 to #StayAtHome. PDS ration home-delivered to 75,216 families in 6 days, 1.85 Lakh families more to go. People turning up at some depots are discouraged,” Srinagar DC Shahid Iqbal Choudhary tweeted on Friday.(KINS)
