KPDCL Cracks Down on Non-Paying Consumers, Disconnects Thousands of Connections

SRINAGAR, JULY 19: The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has intensified its efforts against non-payment of electricity bills, disconnecting thousands of smart-metered consumers remotely. In areas with flat-rated connections, consumers who haven’t paid their dues for months are being physically disconnected until they clear their bills.
A KPDCL spokesperson emphasized the need for timely payment, stating that the corporation relies on these payments to remain economically viable. On Thursday, 1,134 smart-metered consumers in Electric Division Chanapora were disconnected. Additionally, 440 consumers in ESD Baramulla I, 240 in ESD Baramulla II, and 228 in ESD Qazigund had their electricity supply cut off.
The spokesperson also mentioned that many consumers in subdivisions like Habba Kadal, Watalkadal, Hawal, Anantnag, Kupwara, Handwara, Sopore, Budgam, Chadoora, Zainakote, Zakura, Nishat, and Dalgate are being disconnected for not paying bills for over three months.
KPDCL is urging consumers to clear their pending dues promptly and is accelerating its disconnection drives against defaulters. Consumers with significant outstanding balances are encouraged to take advantage of the Government’s Power Amnesty Scheme, which allows for the payment of the principal amount in full or in installments, with a waiver on late payment surcharges. The spokesperson noted that KPDCL is organizing daily Amnesty Camps across all Electric Divisions, with over 1 lakh domestic consumers having already benefited from the scheme.
