Assembly Elections: Counting begins, ‘Postal Ballots first, EVMs to follow’

Srinagar, Oct 08 (KINS): Amid stringent three-tier security, the vote counting for the 90-seat Jammu and Kashmir legislative Assembly commenced today at 28 centres across the Union Territory.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Pandurang K. Pole stated that the process will start with counting of postal ballots, followed by the counting of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) after a 30-minute interval.

Pole highlighted the tight security measures in place to ensure a smooth counting process.

“We have ensured comprehensive security with a three-layer protection system around all counting centres,” he told news agency KINS.

The counting centres are distributed across 20 districts in the Union Territory.

“There are 28 counting centres across Jammu and Kashmir, and the process has begun at all locations,” Pole said, assuring that each round’s results would be shared in real-time.

The elections, which took place on October 1, concluded peacefully with a notable 64 percent voter turnout. Candidates from national and regional political parties, along with a record number of independent candidates, contested all 90 seats.

As the votes are tallied, security remains tight, ensuring that the process continues without disruptions.

The final results of these elections likely in the evening will play a pivotal role in shaping the political future of Jammu and Kashmir in the post-Article 370 era.(KINS)
