UT status may offer temporary shield to officers from accountability in J&K, says CM Omar Abdullah

KINS Correspondent
Srinagar, Oct 28 (KINS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said that Jammu and Kashmir’s Union Territory (UT) status may offer bureaucrats a temporary shield from accountability.
“Some may believe J&K’s UT status offers a temporary shield from accountability. However, this protection is merely a short-term condition. Once statehood is restored, any misuse of the system or attempts to play one entity against another will be stopped” Omar said, according to news agency KINS, while chairing a meeting of officers at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar.
He acknowledged the complexities of J&K’s current system of governance under UT administration. “Officials who might seek to exploit loopholes within this structure must know, based on my recent high-level meetings in Delhi, J&K is heading towards transformation,” he said, indicating potential progress toward the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Omar urged government officials to uphold their commitment to integrity, emphasizing the importance of honesty in governance.
“We have taken a pledge, and that pledge must mean something,” he said, stressing that the credibility of J&K’s leaders and officials is crucial in maintaining public trust.
He urged officers to adhere to the values they have vowed to uphold, highlighting that leadership begins with personal integrity. (KINS)
