Jammu, Oct 29: Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir concluded a 27-hour-long gunfight on Tuesday morning, killing two additional terrorists holed up in a forest near a village in the Akhnoor sector, bringing the total number of militants killed in the operation to three, officials reported.
The encounter began Monday morning when three terrorists opened fire on an ambulance that was part of an army convoy near the Line of Control (LoC). In response, joint teams of the army, special forces, and NSG commandos launched an extensive operation, using BMP-II infantry combat vehicles for added support. By Monday evening, one terrorist had been eliminated, while the remaining two were neutralized early Tuesday near the Assan temple in Jogwan village, Battal-Khour area.
Officials confirmed that after an overnight lull, security forces initiated a final assault around 7 a.m. Tuesday, leading to a fresh exchange of fire. Multiple explosions and intense gunfire were reported for over an hour, resulting in the deaths of the last two terrorists.
Tragically, a four-year-old army dog, Phantom, was killed in the line of duty after sustaining a bullet wound. This operation marked the first time the Army deployed BMP-II vehicles for enhanced surveillance and perimeter control, with helicopters and drones also assisting in locating the hidden terrorists.
This encounter in the Jammu region follows an increase in terrorist activity in Kashmir, where seven attacks over the past two weeks have led to 13 fatalities, including two soldiers.
