Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chairs high-level security review meeting in Srinagar

Focuses on security grid amid fresh snowfall

Srinagar, Dec 30 (KINS): Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a high-level security review meeting at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar today.
The meeting brought together senior officials from various security agencies to assess the current security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, especially with the onset of the winter season and fresh snowfall.
The meeting was attended by top police officers, and other key personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, as well as central security agencies.
The primary objective of the meeting was to discuss the security preparedness in the region as it enters the busy winter tourist season, while also addressing potential threats posed by the fresh snowfall in higher reaches.
News gathering agency KINS reported that one of the key concerns raised during the meeting was the potential for increased infiltration attempts due to the weather conditions.
With the snow making it more difficult for security forces to monitor the borders, the risk of militants attempting to cross the Line of Control (LoC) has heightened. “While snowfall enhances the beauty of the region for tourists, it also brings along challenges, particularly in terms of border security. The snow provides cover for infiltration, which requires heightened vigilance,” an intelligence source explained.
“We have already stepped up our patrols and are utilizing advanced surveillance technology to counter any infiltration attempts, particularly along the borders,” said a senior police official. “Snowfall can limit visibility and complicate ground operations, but we are fully prepared to ensure that there are no security lapses,” the officer added.
The meeting also discussed strategies to manage the security of popular winter tourist destinations like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Sonamarg, where an influx of visitors is expected over the next few weeks. Security arrangements for the
upcoming winter carnival events in these locations were a major topic of discussion. Authorities are focusing on ensuring the safety of both locals and tourists, while maintaining a strong security presence across the region.
“We are fully committed to ensuring the safety of visitors, and our security teams are on high alert,” said the top security officials, emphasizing the importance of inter-agency coordination. “We are working closely with the army and other forces to handle any emerging threats during the winter months.”
Apart from the tourism-related security concerns, the review meeting also touched on broader security issues in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly counter-insurgency efforts and the situation along the borders. “Our forces are actively addressing both security challenges and insurgency concerns in J&K. The situation along the LoC remains under constant monitoring and we are focused on preventing infiltration attempts,” said a senior army official.
The meeting concluded with a focus on the need for continuous monitoring and cooperation between local, state, and central agencies (KINS)
