Handicrafts Department Distributes Kani Looms, Namdah Tools to Empower Artisans

Srinagar, Jan 16 (KINS): In a significant initiative to preserve Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage and empower traditional craftsmen, the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom distributed 10 Kani looms and 25 specialized Namdah toolkits free of cost to local artisans.

The distribution event, held at the Handicraft Block Office in Safakadal, Srinagar, was presided over by Mussarat Islam, Director of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Islam highlighted the importance of this initiative in promoting economic independence for artisans. “This is a vital step towards enhancing the livelihoods of our artisans. We are committed to equipping them with the tools and opportunities they need to compete in global markets,” he stated.

The initiative aims to improve the efficiency and quality of traditional crafts, enabling artisans to produce high-quality products while sustaining their unique heritage. Assistant Director of Handicrafts, Srinagar, Mohsina Irshad, played a pivotal role in organizing the event and ensuring its success.

This distribution is part of the Government’s broader efforts to uplift the Handicrafts sector in Kashmir. Since Srinagar’s inclusion in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) and its designation as a Craft City by the World Crafts Council (WCC), the Department has accelerated its initiatives to celebrate and preserve the region’s artistic legacy.

By empowering artisans with resources and training, the Government continues to work towards strengthening Kashmir’s centuries-old craft traditions and enabling artisans to thrive in a competitive global marketplace.(KINS)
