Srinagar, July 02 (KINS): Extensive research carried out by premier medical institutions—the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)—has conclusively ruled out any connection between COVID-19 vaccines and sudden deaths among adults in India. The studies underline that underlying health conditions, genetic predisposition, and lifestyle factors are the primary contributors to such deaths.
The Government of India had initiated a thorough investigation into sudden and unexplained deaths, particularly in the 18–45 age group, following public concern and media speculation. Two major studies were undertaken to identify the causes behind these incidents and assess any potential vaccine-related risks.
The first study, led by ICMR’s National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), was titled “Factors Associated with Unexplained Sudden Deaths Among Adults Aged 18–45 Years in India – A Multicentric Matched Case–Control Study.” Conducted from May to August 2023 across 47 tertiary care hospitals in 19 states and Union Territories, the study examined individuals who died suddenly between October 2021 and March 2023. The results categorically established that COVID-19 vaccination did not increase the risk of sudden death in healthy adults.
The second study, currently being conducted by AIIMS, New Delhi, in collaboration with ICMR, is a prospective investigation titled “Establishing the Cause in Sudden Unexplained Deaths in Young.” Initial findings reaffirm that myocardial infarction (heart attack) remains the leading cause of sudden death among young adults. Notably, no significant deviation in cause patterns was observed when compared to pre-pandemic data. Genetic mutations have also emerged as a contributing factor in several unexplained cases.
Health experts and scientists have reiterated that COVID-19 vaccines in India are safe and effective, with extremely rare serious side effects. They have strongly condemned speculative claims linking vaccinations to sudden deaths, labelling them as false, misleading, and damaging to public health efforts.
“Unverified and alarmist narratives erode public trust in vaccines, which were instrumental in saving millions of lives during the COVID-19 pandemic,” stated a senior ICMR official.
