Over 400 athletes to compete in Kayaking, Canoeing, rowing, and More

Srinagar, July 3 (KINS): In a major boost to adventure and aquatic sports in India, Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake will host the first-ever Water Sports Festival from August 21 to 23, featuring over 400 athletes from across the country.

Announcing the event, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya as per news agency KINS said the festival will showcase competitions in kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, rowing, along with local favorites like Shikara races and Dragon Boat events.

“This initiative under the Khelo India Scheme’s Sports Competition and Talent Development vertical is designed to promote water sports and expand their reach across the country,” Mandaviya told reporters, highlighting the government’s continued efforts to diversify India’s sports landscape.

The event follows the successful launch of Khelo India Beach Games in Diu, reflecting the government’s focus on regional and adventure-based sporting disciplines.

Athletes from 36 States and Union Territories are expected to participate, with nominations being carried out by respective National Sports Federations based on performances in national championships or other recognized events.

The festival is being seen not just as a sporting spectacle, but also as an opportunity to showcase Kashmir’s scenic beauty and promote eco-tourism through sports.(KINS)
