Heavy rains in various districts of Kashmir; Authorities warn of cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides

Srinagar, Aug 25 (KINS): The Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Disaster Management Authority (JKUTDMA) on Sunday issued an advisory warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms in several districts of central and south Kashmir over the next 40 hours.

Authorities cautioned that the inclement weather could trigger cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable areas, urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety measures.

According to the advisory as per news agency KINS, districts likely to be affected include Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama, Ganderbal, and Budgam, where widespread rainfall and thunderstorms are expected.

“People are strongly advised to stay away from Nallas, river banks, and loose structures to safeguard their lives. There is a possibility of heavy rain/thunder at many places of Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama, Ganderbal, and Budgam during the next 40 hours. The risk of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides at vulnerable spots cannot be ruled out,” the JKUTDMA statement read.

The authority also urged citizens to remain prepared and not venture near water bodies or unstable areas. “Dial 112 in case of any emergency,” the advisory added.

With the region already witnessing spells of heavy rainfall in recent weeks, officials have stepped up monitoring of rivers and streams to minimize risks and ensure timely response in case of emergencies.(KINS)
