Transformers burn due to overloading: CM Omar Abdullah urges consumers to declare actual power load; says ‘despite challenges, J&K is upgrading tourism infrastructure to match global destinations’

KINS Correspondent

Srinagar Dec 13 (KINS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday appealed to electricity consumers to honestly declare their actual power load, stating that transformers are getting damaged primarily due to overloading caused by misuse of electricity.

“Show the load genuinely—how much electricity you actually consume. I promise no transformer will develop a fault,” Omar Abdullah told reporters in Gulmarg, according to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).

He said that many consumers obtain connections for a minimal sanctioned load but later use multiple high-power appliances.

He pointed out that people often apply for electricity connections citing usage of four bulbs, but in reality operate several heaters and other heavy appliances. “Obviously, transformers will burn when there is such a massive mismatch between sanctioned load and actual consumption,” the Chief Minister said.

Omar Abdullah stated that if consumers honestly disclose their real electricity requirements and get their load sanctioned accordingly, incidents of transformer burnouts can be largely avoided. “If people show the exact load, the problem of transformers burning will not take place,” he added.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid frequent complaints of transformer failures during peak winter months, when electricity demand surges due to extensive use of heating appliances. He urged public cooperation to ensure a stable and reliable power supply, especially during high-demand periods.

Meanwhile Omar Abdullah as per KINS said that the government remains committed to strengthening tourism infrastructure across the Union Territory despite facing unfavourable circumstances during the year.

The Chief Minister said continuous efforts are being made to further improve facilities at major tourist destinations. “Despite the fact that circumstances have not been in our favour this year, we have made continuous efforts to further improve tourism infrastructure. Today, places like Gulmarg or Pahalgam compete not only with destinations within the country but with destinations across the world,” he said.

Highlighting changing travel patterns, CM Omar Abdullah noted that Indian tourists now travel extensively abroad, making it imperative for destinations in Jammu and Kashmir to meet global standards. “This is no longer a time when Indian tourists travelled only within the country; today, Indian tourists travel all over the world. In such a situation, it is not only our responsibility but, in a way, a compulsion to keep improving our infrastructure,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that several tourism-related projects were inaugurated in Gulmarg on Friday, while foundation stones were laid for additional initiatives aimed at enhancing visitor experience and strengthening the region’s competitiveness as a world-class tourist destination.

He reiterated that sustained infrastructure development remains central to the government’s strategy to boost tourism, generate employment, and support the local economy across Jammu and Kashmir.(KINS)
