Govt constitutes committee to examine fee structure of private schools

Srinagar, Jan 22 (KINS): The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has constituted a high-level committee to examine the issues related to fees charged by private schools, including the cost of books, uniforms, shoes, and other items provided to students.

As per Government Order No. 33-JK (EDU) of 2026, issued by the School Education Department, the committee will be chaired by the Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE). The panel has been tasked with reviewing whether the fees and other charges imposed by private schools are based on verifiable parameters and have a sound and justifiable basis.

The committee as per news agency Kashmir Indpeth News Service (KINS) comprises the Additional Secretary to the Government, School Education Department, as a member, Joint Director (Central), Kashmir, School Education Department, as the Member Secretary, and the Administrative Officer, Fee Fixation and Regulation Committee (FFRC), J&K UT, as a member.

Apart from examining school fees and related costs, the committee will also look into the circumstances and legal basis under which the Fee Fixation and Regulation Committee (FFRC) has mandated the payment of transportation fees during the winter vacation period in the Kashmir Division.

The government has directed the committee to submit a detailed report within 30 days to the Administrative Department.

The order has been issued by Ram Niwas Sharma, IAS, Commissioner/Secretary to the Government, School Education Department.

The move is aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in the fee structure of private schools and addressing long-standing concerns of parents across the Union Territory.(KINS)
