JKSA Welcomes Resolution of SMVD Medical College MBBS Seat Crisis; Thanks CM Omar Abdullah for Timely Intervention

Srinagar, Jan 22 (KINS): The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Thursday has welcomed the resolution of the long-pending college allocation issue concerning the selected MBBS candidates of the now de-recognised Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College (SMVDMC), describing it as a major relief for the affected students and their families.

National Convenor of the Association, Nasir Khuehami, said that this is a significant step, as the Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (JKBOPEE) has announced physical counselling for the allocation of 50 MBBS supernumerary seats, enabling the accommodation of affected students in Government Medical Colleges across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. With the counselling schedule now issued, the students can finally move forward with their medical education after months of prolonged uncertainty.

He noted that this decision brings long-awaited clarity and closure to an issue that had placed the academic future of 50 meritorious MBBS students at serious risk. The resolution has eased anxiety among students and parents alike, ensuring that a precious academic year is saved and preserved, and preventing irreversible academic and psychological loss.

Association said that; the announcement has come as a collective sigh of relief for families who had been living under immense stress due to the absence of a clear and fair roadmap. He remarked that the decision reflects administrative sensitivity and a willingness to undertake course correction when student careers and public interest are at stake.

He asserted that medical education cannot be reduced to a casualty of ideological extremes, nor can public health be held hostage to selective moral posturing or prolonged administrative indecision. Decisions impacting medical institutions, he said, must be guided by academic prudence, student welfare, and the larger public good, rather than rigid positions that risk derailing young careers.

The Association firmly believes that safeguarding medical institutions from ideological or bureaucratic interference is essential to protecting both the future of aspiring doctors and the integrity of India’s healthcare system.

Khuehami also expressed his sincere gratitude to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Sahab for his timely intervention and responsive leadership in addressing this critical academic concern. The Association acknowledged that the issue required decisive political and administrative will, which ultimately paved the way for a student-centric and just resolution.

The Association also appreciated JKBOPEE for revisiting its earlier position and taking a corrective step in the larger interest of students. The Association remains hopeful that this resolution will restore confidence among aspiring medical students and reinforce trust in the education and healthcare governance framework of Jammu and Kashmir.(KINS)
