Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyaan: Police arrest six drug peddlers, recover large quantity of contraband
Srinagar, May 21 (KINS): Continuing its intensified anti-drug campaign under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan, Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday arrested six drug peddlers in separate operations across Baramulla, Anantnag and Kulgam districts and recovered a huge quantity of contraband substances from their possession.
In Baramulla, a police party from Police Station Boniyar, during routine patrolling in the Trikanjan area, apprehended a suspicious person. During his search, police recovered a charas-like substance wrapped in polythene. The accused was identified as Sabbir Mumtaz, son of Mumtaz Ahmad Khan, a resident of Trikanjan. Accordingly, a case under FIR No. 16/2026 under Section 8/20 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Boniyar and investigation has been taken up.
In Anantnag, Police Station Srigufwara arrested a most-wanted drug peddler during naka checking at Shakras. The accused was identified as Nasir Ahmad Dohbi, son of Ghulam Qadir Dohbi, a resident of Sallar. During checking, the police party intercepted the accused and recovered approximately five kilograms of charas powder-like substance from his possession. In this connection, FIR No. 52/2026 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Srigufwara and further investigation has been initiated.
In another operation in Anantnag, Police Station Achabal, during naka checking near Petrol Pump Achabal, apprehended one Irshad Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Hassan Bhat, a resident of Magraypora. During his search, police recovered a heroin-like substance from the right pocket of his trousers. Accordingly, FIR No. 41/2026 under Section 8/21 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Achabal and investigation is underway.
In Kulgam, a police party from Police Station Qazigund, during routine naka checking at Chowgam Bridge, intercepted a suspicious person carrying a nylon bag and coming from Chowgam towards Churat. Acting swiftly, the police party apprehended the suspect on the spot. He was identified as Bilal Ahmad Hajam, son of Abdul Salam Hajam, a resident of Larkipora, Dooru. During the search of the nylon bag, police recovered approximately 4.52 kilograms of charas powder from his possession.
In another operation, a team from Police Station Qazigund was conducting naka checking near the old check-post at Chowgam Bridge when a suspicious person was intercepted. During questioning, he identified himself as Sameer Ahmad Sheikh, son of Farooq Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Bangedar, Anantnag. During a personal search, police recovered a concealed light green polythene bag containing 157.7 grams of charas-like substance in the shape of four sticks wrapped in corn husk.
In yet another operation, a police party during patrolling at Sopat Link Road near Sarnard noticed a suspicious person carrying a nylon bag and moving towards Sopat main road. On noticing the police party, the individual attempted to flee but was tactfully apprehended. The accused was identified as Nazir Ahmad Rather, son of Mohammad Abdullah Rather, a resident of Sopat Tangpora. During the search of the nylon bag, police recovered approximately 2.6 kilograms of poppy straw-like substance from his possession.
All the accused persons have been arrested and cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at the respective police stations. Further investigation in all the cases has been initiated.
Jammu and Kashmir Police reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against the drug menace and said stringent action against drug peddlers and smugglers will continue to safeguard society and protect the youth. Police also appealed to the general public to cooperate and share information related to drug peddling in their areas.(KINS)
