JK gears up for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections, Elaborate arrangements made for Ist phase of polls: Election Authorities

Srinagar, Apr 10: The stage is set for over 24 lakh voters in Jammu and Baramullah Lok sabha constituencies, to exercise their right to vote in the first phase of polls tomorrow.
Meanwhile the authorities said that all arrangements have been put in place to conduct safe and secure elections.
Voting is scheduled tomorrow in both the Lok Sabha constituencies from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
All security and other necessary arrangements have been put in place,” one of the top police officials told Kashmir Indepth and added that deployment plan of the forces would be in accordance with the requirement in the poll bound areas.

Election authorities here said that they are ready for the polling day. “All necessary preparations and security arrangements are in place for the smooth conduct of the elections,” Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Shalinder Kumar said.
As many as 13,12,148 voters will decide the fate of 9 candidates in the fray in Baramullah constituency where 1,749 polling stations have been set up.
The constituency will witness a contest among Muhammad Akbar Lone of the NC, Raja Aijaz Ali of the Peoples Conference (PC), Abdul Qayoom Wani of the PDP and the independent candidate, Engineer Rashid.
BJP has fielded M.M. War and Congress Haji Farooq Mir from here.
In Jammu constituency as many as 10,70,014 voters would be deciding the fate of 24 candidates.
The main contestants include Kishore Sharma of the BJP, Raman Bhalla of the Congress, Prof Bhim Singh of the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP), Choudhary Lal Singh of Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan, Badrinath of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Javid Ahmad of All India Forward Block.
National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have not fielded any candidates in this constituency.
Sources said that in the light of the vulnerable situation, authorities will deploy several companies of police, paramilitary CRPF in Baramullah and other districts to ensure smooth and incident-free polls. Almost all the polling stations were taken over on Wednesday by the CRPF men, sources said.
Meanwhile police said that they are determined to make the ground safe for a successful poll and would, therefore, not spare any persons who try to disrupt the orderly conduct of the exercise.
