Srinagar, June 16 (KINS): At least 22 people have been injured in dog attacks in the last 24-hours at Kamad Anantnag after district administration failed to check the growing population of stray dogs.
The Kamad is just three-kilometres from the main town Anantnag, which houses around 1000 families.
However, the inhabitants of Kamad are these days living under constant fear.
For the last 24-hours, at least 22 people have been injured by stray dogs in the area.
The stray dogs have created a terror that people are reluctant even to venture out of their homes in the evening hours.
“After the sun-sets in, we are not able to move out of our homes. Many people even prefer to offer prayers at home,” a local of Kamad, said.
Another local, Umar Gul Parray claimed he purchased an anti-rabies vaccine for Rs 450 from a private medical shop for his sister who was bitten by a stray dog as the hospital was closed on Monday evening.
People say that packs of canine roam freely in various villages of Kamad, posing a constant threat.
These dogs could be mostly spotted near Jamia Masjid Banpora Kamad.
Mir Mushtaq, who is also Auqaf member of the Kamad, said people are more afraid of stray dogs than COVID-19 in the area.
“Twenty-two people have been injured for the last 24-hours.We have to carry sticks in hands while coming out of our homes to ensure dogs stay away. A stray dog has reign terror in the area. Concerned authorities are yet to catch this stray dog,” Mushtaq told news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).
He said these dogs attack people especially during morning and evening hours. “We also fear we may get infected as these dogs also have some skin disease.”
Medical Superintendent GMC Anantnag Dr Majeed Mehrab told KINS that they received 11 people since Monday who were bitten by dogs.“There is no shortage of anti-rabies vaccine,” he said. (KINS)
