Plantation Drive carried out as part of Sanitation campaign in UT of J&K

Srinagar, Aug 12 (KINS): Tree plantation drive as a part of weeklong behavioral change sanitation campaign “Gandagi Mukht Bharat ” was held in Jammu and Kashmir. 

The officials told news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS) that on the fifth day of the GMB campaign week, communities at all levels -Districts, Blocks and Villages- were seen actively participating in plantation drives.

“The plantation drive was carried out in Panchayat Ghars, schools, hospitals, along roads and other public places. In the drive , saplings of different kinds of plants were planted which includes flowers, medicinal plants,ornamental plants, fruit trees , deodars & kail”.

On the occasion of the plantation drive, one of the Block Development Council Chairperson said “By planting saplings, we are not doing any favour. In fact we are making life easy for ourselves”. “The initiative would bring major relief to the environment. This will maintain the balance in environment” said a local.

District Panchayat Officer Udhampur informed that all female Sarpanches have actively participated in the plantation drive.

In some districts the plantation drive was carried out in collaboration with J&K Social Forestry Department.  During the drive, the participants were given a message that  just planting a tree will not suffice the purpose, watering and maintenance is also equally important.

At the Block level the activities are carried out by Block Development Officers led by the District Panchayat Officers under the supervision of concerned Deputy Commissioners.

The campaign at UT level is being led by Director, Rural Sanitation, J&K under the overall supervision and guidance of Secretary RDD & PR J&K (KINS).
