MHA asks security agencies to be vigilant about drones in Delhi ahead of Independence Day

New Delhi, July 26

Weeks after the Jammu drone attack, the Centre has instructed all security agencies to be extra vigilant about any flying objects ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has ordered stricter adherence to the Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) that was framed to handle threats from Sub-Conventional Aerial Platforms like drones, paragliders, microlight aircraft, hot-air balloons.

In the laid down guidelines, the DCP of North District, in charge of the Red Fort, may identify buildings’ rooftops from where security agencies can get an aerial view of the entire district. MHA has also asked watchers to be deployed on these rooftops.

The MHA guidelines further mention shooting down such objects if they try to go near sensitive areas.

Delhi Police Commissioner Balaji Srivastava had earlier issued orders prohibiting the flying of aerial objects like drones, paragliders, and hot air balloons, ahead of Independence Day celebrations.Doing so shall be punishable under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, the order stated. The order shall remain in force in Delhi for a period of 32 days from Friday till August 16 for security reasons. ( Source PTI)
