Srinagar, Sep 04 (KINS): The Election Commission of India (ECI) has enforced a strict ban on conducting exit polls by media outlets during the 2024 Assembly Elections in Jammu and Kashmir, as per Section 126A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. This ban begins at the start of polling on September 18, 2024, and extends until 6:30 PM on October 5, 2024, covering all phases of the election.
According to the notification issued today, the ban applies to the publication or dissemination of exit poll results via any medium, including print and electronic media. The notification emphasized that any violation of this provision could result in imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both.
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections will be held in three phases starting September 18, 2024. The ECI’s directive aims to ensure a fair electoral process across the Union Territory. Additionally, Section 126(1)(b) of the R.P. Act, 1951, prohibits the display of election-related content, including opinion poll results, during the 48-hour period leading up to the conclusion of polling.(KINS)
