Srinagar, October 4 (KINS): Former Indian cricketer and coach Ravi Shastri expressed optimism about the future of cricket in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the immense potential of local youth. Speaking at the sidelines of the Legends League Cricket tournament in Srinagar, Shastri reflected on the transformation in the region’s cricketing scene since his first visit in 1987.
Shastri, who played in Srinagar over three decades ago, noted the significant improvements in both infrastructure and enthusiasm for the sport. “There’s incredible talent here. With the right exposure, these youngsters can go far. Seeing legends participate in events like this serves as an inspiration to them,” he said, according to a KINS correspondent.
Commenting on local fast-bowling sensation Umran Malik, Shastri advised him to stay focused and dedicated. “Umran has the ability, but he must keep working hard. The competition is stiff, but with persistence, he can achieve greatness,” Shastri remarked.
He also praised the cricket facilities in the region, acknowledging the strides made since his last match there. “The ground is looking much better. With some attention to the pitch and outfield, it can become one of the finest venues in the region,” Shastri added.
The ongoing Legends League Cricket event has attracted numerous former international players, giving local athletes a chance to interact with seasoned cricketers. Shastri stressed the importance of such events, saying, “Watching top players in action was always a thrill for us as youngsters. These tournaments give local talent the platform to dream big and aim for new heights.”
Shastri concluded by underscoring the need for sustained efforts to nurture J&K’s cricketing potential and provide its youth with the opportunities they deserve.(KINS)
