Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine board to implement ropeway project to ease pilgrimage for devotees

KINS DESK
Srinagar, Nov 18 (KINS): The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has decided to implement the long-awaited ropeway project to enhance accessibility and address the growing demand of devotees visiting the revered shrine.
Aimed at facilitating elderly and differently-abled pilgrims, the project promises a safer, faster, and more inclusive pilgrimage experience.
“The board has decided to implement the ropeway project, which will be a game changer, especially for pilgrims unable to undertake the 13-kilometre trek to the shrine,” said Anshul Garg, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SMVDSB, while addressing reporters in Katra as per news agency KINS.
The ropeway, connecting Tarakote Marg to Bhawan—the main shrine area—will significantly reduce the hours-long trek to a matter of minutes. It is designed to accommodate several thousand pilgrims daily, easing congestion on the traditional path and ensuring a smoother journey.
Highlighting the exponential rise in pilgrim numbers, Garg noted, “Last year, the yatra set a record with over 95 lakh devotees. This project will cater to the increasing number of visitors and ensure that the pilgrimage is accessible to all, especially the elderly and differently-abled.”
The ropeway project has been under discussion for years, with the board now committed to addressing local concerns and ensuring minimal environmental impact during its implementation. “We are dedicated to considering the aspirations of all stakeholders, including locals, while making the pilgrimage more inclusive,” Garg assured.
The new route will offer breathtaking views of the Trikuta Hills, enhancing the spiritual and scenic experience for devotees. The project will also complement existing services, such as the limited-capacity helicopter service, to better meet the needs of the growing number of yatris.
Officials confirmed that groundwork for the project would commence soon, marking a significant milestone in the shrine board’s efforts to modernize facilities while preserving the sanctity and environment of the holy site.(KINS)
