Srinagar, Feb 13 (KINS): In an effort to familiarize the public with India’s newly enacted criminal laws, the State Institute of Education, in collaboration with the district police and administration Thursday organized an awareness program in Srinagar.
The event, attended by heads of educational institutions and officials, aimed to educate people about the transition from colonial-era penal laws to a justice-oriented legal framework.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the event, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain according to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS) highlighted the fundamental shift in India’s legal system from punishment-based laws to justice-centric reforms.
He stated that the new laws prioritize transparency, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
“The journey from penal to justice is a radical transformation. The objective is to ensure a citizen-centric legal system that upholds democratic and constitutional values,” the SSP stated.
He said that awareness programs will be conducted regularly—every month or fortnight—under a comprehensive government approach to educate people about their rights and responsibilities.
The SSP also underscored the need for public participation in strengthening the criminal justice system.
“Only when every citizen is aware of their rights and responsibilities can the system truly function in a just and transparent manner,” he said.
When asked about introducing these legal reforms into academic curriculums at colleges and universities, SSP Hussain stated that while he could not confirm any immediate steps, it was likely that the new laws would be incorporated into educational syllabi in the future. (KINS)
