Press Club of Kashmir welcomes quashing of PSA against Journalist Majid Hyderi

Srinagar, Feb 19 (KINS): The Press Club of Kashmir on Wednesday expressed happiness over the quashing of the Public Safety Act (PSA) against Majid Hyderi, a prominent journalist from the region.

Hyderi was booked under PSA in 2023 on what the club described as “frivolous grounds.”

In a press release the press club said that the executive body of the Press Club convened a meeting at its premises, where members welcomed Hyderi’s release. The body also lauded his family for displaying resilience and enduring the ordeal with steadfastness.

Expressing solidarity with the journalist, the club reiterated its commitment to press freedom and the protection of journalists’ rights in Kashmir.

“We stand firmly for the freedom of the press and will always support journalists facing undue pressure,” said M. Saleem Pandit, President and Patron of the Press Club of Kashmir.

The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Wednesday quashed the detention order of journalist Majid Hyderi under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

Justice V K Chatterjee quashed the detention of Hyderi under PSA, advocate Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, counsel for the journalist, said.

Hyderi was arrested in September, 2023 on charges of extortion and defamation. He was booked under the PSA and lodged in Kot Bhalwal Jail.(KINS)
