Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi urge PM Modi to restore Statehood to J&K

Srinagar, July 16 (KINS): Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi have jointly written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, strongly urging the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

In the letter, the senior Congress leaders as per news agency KINS, reminded the Prime Minister of repeated commitments made by the Centre, including his own public assurances in Bhubaneswar and Srinagar last year, and the Union Government’s submissions before the Supreme Court during the hearings on Article 370.

“For the past five years, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have consistently called for the restoration of full statehood. This demand is both legitimate and firmly grounded in their constitutional and democratic rights,” the letter states.

Calling the downgrading of Jammu and Kashmir from a full-fledged state to a Union Territory “unprecedented”, Kharge and Rahul Gandhi appealed to the government to introduce legislation in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament to reinstate statehood.

They also emphasized the need for Ladakh to be brought under the Sixth Schedule, stating that such a move would protect the land, identity, and rights of the region’s people while fulfilling their developmental and political aspirations.(KINS)
