Questions raised over effectiveness of Bund near Aramwari Rajbagh

Srinagar, Aug 28 (KINS):  Residents of Aramwari Rajbagh have expressed serious concern over the construction of a bund along the Jhelum River, questioning its purpose and effectiveness in safeguarding lives and properties from floods.

Locals told news agency KINS, the bund was meant to act as a protective barrier against rising water levels and waterlogging in the area. However, they point out that a wide gap has been left open in the embankment, which makes it vulnerable and defeats the very purpose for which it was constructed.

“A bund is supposed to act as a safeguard, but if water can easily enter through a gap, then what is the benefit of spending huge sums of public money on such a structure?” asked a resident Umar Amin.

“Every time it rains heavily, we face a flood-like situation. The authorities claim the bund is for our protection, but leaving portions open has made it ineffective and even dangerous.”

Locals fear that during high water levels, the open portion could allow water to gush into residential areas, worsening the risk of flooding. They believe such lapses indicate poor planning and negligence on the part of the authorities.

“The government must explain whether this bund was built merely for show or for genuine protection,” another resident asked. “If it is truly meant to save lives, then the structure should be foolproof, without loopholes that put people at risk.”

Residents have urged the authorities to immediately address the issue and close the gaps before another flood situation arises. (KINS)
