Srinagar, Mar 1 (KINS): The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU) on Sunday called for a complete shutdown across Kashmir tomorrow (Monday) to protest the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The call was announced by Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who said the Muslim world had been deeply shaken by the development and urged people in Jammu and Kashmir to observe the strike in a peaceful manner.
In a statement according to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS), Mirwaiz said the MMU has appealed to people to observe the shutdown with unity, dignity and complete peacefulness as a mark of protest and solidarity with the people of Iran.
He described the reported killing of Khamenei as a “grave and tragic development” and said the people of Kashmir stand with the Iranian nation in this difficult time.
Mirwaiz also called on Muslims to rise above divisions and remain united, stressing that collective voices must be raised against what he termed aggression and injustice in the region.
Meanwhile, several religious and political leaders in Kashmir condemned the development, terming it a destabilising act with serious global repercussions.
Reports of protests and mourning gatherings also emerged from several parts of the Valley following the news of Khamenei’s killing, with demonstrators expressing grief and anger over the incident.
The MMU urged people to maintain calm and ensure that the shutdown is observed peacefully across the Valley on Monday.
