Lt Gen Balbir Singh takes charge as Chinar Corps Commander

Srinagar, May 1 (KINS): Lieutenant General Balbir Singh on Friday took over as the General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the Army’s Chinar Corps, succeeding Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastava after his 19-month tenure.

During his tenure, Lt Gen Srivastava led several important security and counter-terror operations in Kashmir. Under his leadership, the Army strengthened the security setup in the Valley and carried out operations such as Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev following the Pahalgam attack.

The Army also ensured the smooth and peaceful conduct of the Amarnath Yatra 2025. Security forces achieved major successes in counter-infiltration operations along the Line of Control and intensified anti-terror operations in the hinterland.

Apart from security operations, Lt Gen Srivastava was also known for his outreach programmes aimed at building trust with the local population. He has now been appointed as Quarter Master General at Army Headquarters in New Delhi.

Lt Gen Balbir Singh, who has more than 34 years of service in the Army, formally assumed charge on May 1, 2026. After taking over, he paid tribute to fallen soldiers at the Chinar War Memorial in Srinagar.

A highly experienced officer, Lt Gen Balbir Singh has served in several counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism roles in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. He had earlier commanded the Counter Insurgency Force (Victor) in South Kashmir.

In his first address after assuming charge, he said he would work closely with the civil administration and the people of Kashmir to strengthen peace, stability and development in the region. He also appealed for public cooperation in tackling security challenges.(KINS)
