Power outage on Shab-e-Mehraj causes widespread hardship in Uri

Shoaib Pathan
Uri, Jan 16 (KINS): The holy and blessed night of Shab-e-Mehraj is being marred by a prolonged power outage in several areas of Uri in North Kashmir Baramulla, causing immense hardship to local residents. Areas including Dardkote, Isham, Kamalkote, Nawa Runda, Sultandaki and other remote villages plunged into darkness after electricity went off around 6 p.m. on Froday, locals told KINS.
Residents said that while they initially expected power to be restored by 8 p.m., the supply remained disrupted for hours, leaving people distressed on an important religious occasion. Shab-e-Mehraj holds special significance for prayers, worship and remembrance of Allah, but the absence of electricity left mosques dark and affected devotees’ ability to offer prayers comfortably at home.
The outage proved particularly difficult amid the prevailing cold weather, with elderly people, children and women bearing the brunt of the situation. In many areas, residents were compelled to rely on candles and mobile phone torches to manage basic activities.
Locals expressed strong resentment over the recurring power cuts, especially on holy and important occasions, terming the situation unacceptable. They urged the concerned electricity department to take the issue seriously and ensure uninterrupted power supply in advance during religious events so that people can observe their prayers in peace and comfort.
