J&K Police arrest hit-and-run accused from Uttar Pradesh, seize vehicle

Srinagar, July 16 (KINS): Police in Kulgam have arrested the accused involved in a fatal hit-and-run case from Uttar Pradesh and seized the offending vehicle during the investigation.

The case relates to a road accident that occurred on July 10 near KP Colony, Vessu, where an unidentified vehicle hit an 11-year-old girl. The injured child was shifted to Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Following the incident, Police registered FIR No. 176/2026 at Police Station Qazigund under relevant sections of law and constituted a special investigation team.

During the investigation, police analysed CCTV footage, examined evidence, and developed technical leads, which helped identify the accused and trace the vehicle.

Acting on the leads, a team from Police Station Qazigund, with assistance from the Uttar Pradesh Police, arrested the accused, identified as Arun Gupta, son of Lalit Ram Gupta, a resident of Behrinbagh, Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. The vehicle involved in the accident was also seized.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kulgam said the arrest demonstrates that offenders cannot escape the law by crossing state boundaries. He said coordinated police action and the effective use of technical evidence led to the successful identification and arrest of the accused.

The SSP also urged motorists to drive responsibly, strictly follow traffic regulations, and never flee the scene of an accident. He advised drivers to assist accident victims and immediately inform the nearest police station or emergency services, stressing that fleeing an accident scene not only attracts legal action but may also deny victims timely medical assistance.

Further investigation is in progress.(KINS)
