Srinagar: In a Strongly worded press communique, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik said that parties in the state made ‘an attempt to gain power rather than to form a responsive government’.
He cited this as one of the reasons why he decided to dissolve Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
This apparently, is a reference to a push by People’s Democratic Party (PDP), National Conference (NC) and Congress to form a government in the violence-hit state.
The Governor said that formation of a stable new government in the state was an “impossibility” as parties with opposing political ideologies “including some which have been demanding the dissolution of the Assembly” were coming together.
He then termed such an alliance as “an attempt to gain power rather than to form a responsive government.
The Governor felt that a stable government is necessary to combat terrorism in the state. He said that a stable government can’t be formed by an alliance of parties with opposing political ideologies which are possibly resorting to horse trading to ensure adequate numbers in the Assembly.
In an exclusive telephonic interview with India Today TV, the Governor reiterated that there was horse trading to secure the support of the MLAs.
Contradicting claims made by PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti and People’s Conference’s Sajjad Lone, the Governor said nobody staked claim to form a government in the state and that both the letters were not entertained.
Governor Satyapal Malik sent ripples through national politics as he dissolved Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday evening.
PDP leader and former CM Mehbooba Mufti called the decision “strange” and “disappointing” in her tweet.
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, who is also a former chief minister of the state tweeted that his party was demanding for dissolution of the assembly for 5 months.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir was put under Governor’s Rule in June this year after BJP withdrew support to Mehbooba Mufti government.
