SMC shortlists 23 springs for rejuvenation, Earmarks Rs. 200 lacs under NCAP

Srinagar, Mar 05: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has taken a significant step towards environmental conservation and sustainable development by shortlisting 23 springs within the municipal limits for rejuvenation this year.
With an earmarked budget of Rs. 200 lacs under the National Clean Air Program (NCAP), the initiative aims to revive these natural water sources to enhance water access and contribute to achieving one or more Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Recognizing the importance of spring rejuvenation as a climate-resilient solution for livelihoods and ecosystems in mountainous regions, the SMC, under the leadership of Commissioner Owais IAS, is actively pursuing community participation in this endeavor. Commissioner Owais IAS emphasizes the significance of community involvement in spring revival, as it holds promise across the region and is creating policy traction on Spring Water management.
The rejuvenation of springs not only promises to improve water access but also has the potential to positively impact various aspects of life in the region. It could contribute to mitigating water scarcity challenges, preserving biodiversity, and fostering sustainable development practices.
By prioritizing the revival of natural springs, the SMC is taking a proactive approach towards environmental conservation and addressing the pressing issues of water scarcity and ecosystem degradation. This initiative underscores the municipality’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and ensuring the well-being of its residents and the environment.
