Srinagar, Apr 29: Relentless downpours since Sunday evening have thrown several districts of the Kashmir Valley into disarray, forcing the closure of numerous schools and the shutdown of the critical Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Despite assurances from the administration that water levels remain below the danger mark, heavy rainfall and snowfall in higher elevations have disrupted normal life on Monday.
The incessant rain, combined with fresh snow in the upper reaches, has led to a significant rise in water levels of rivers and streams across the valley. Authorities, however, have moved to allay fears of flooding, citing active monitoring and precautionary measures.
Nevertheless, moderate to heavy rainfall has flooded roads and low-lying areas, severely impacting daily activities throughout Monday. Responding to adverse weather, several schools suspended classes as a precautionary measure.
District administrations in Kupwara, Bandipora, and Kangan announced the closure of educational institutions in response to inclement weather and avalanche warnings.
Areas including Zojila, Sadhna Top, Razdan Pass, and Dawar Gurez experienced heavy rains and snowfall. The Meteorological Department forecasts continued cloudy weather with possible rain, snow, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and gusty winds in isolated areas.
Despite predictions, the Irrigation and Flood Control department reassured the public of no immediate flood threat, monitoring water levels in the Jhelum River and other bodies hourly.
However, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in several north Kashmir areas, temporarily closing the Kupwara-Sopore national highway. In central Kashmir, an avalanche in Sonamarg’s Sarbal area caused no casualties.
Major road closures, including the Jammu-Srinagar highway and Mughal Road, severely disrupted transportation. Authorities urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway until conditions improve.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha directed officials to remain in districts and assist affected areas, personally overseeing relief efforts.(KNS)
