Srinagar, June 26 (KINS): AICC General Secretary in-charge of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh affairs, Dr. Sayeed Naseer Hussain, on Thursday said the Congress party will step up its campaign for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
He accused the BJP-led Centre of ‘betraying the people by delaying statehood despite clear assurances made in Parliament and before the Supreme Court’.
Addressing a press conference at the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) headquarters in Srinagar as per news agency KINS, Dr. Naseer was joined by JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra, AICC General Secretary and CLP Leader G.A. Mir, AICC Secretaries Manoj Yadav and Divya Maderna, Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma, and senior leaders Bashir Ahmad Magrey, S.S. Channi, and former MLA Nizamuddin Bhat.
Dr. Naseer said he held extensive discussions with party leaders in both Srinagar and Jammu and urged the cadre to strengthen the ongoing struggle for statehood. He also announced plans to tour various districts along with senior leadership to engage with workers and fortify the party’s organizational structure.
On the issue of vacant Rajya Sabha seats, Dr. Naseer expressed concern over Jammu and Kashmir’s lack of representation in the Upper House, calling it unjustified and demanding immediate corrective measures.
Responding to queries regarding the Election Commission, he said the Congress party had raised serious concerns after detailed internal reviews. He added that members of the INDIA bloc are entitled to independent opinions on the matter.
Addressing questions about new entrants into the Congress, he said all inductions will be made in consultation with the senior leadership of the JKPCC, on a case-to-case basis. He further stated that the PCC and other party committees will be reconstituted soon, as they currently stand dissolved.
Dr. Naseer warned that any instances of indiscipline within the party will be dealt with firmly in accordance with party rules, asserting that the organization remains supreme.
Earlier, while speaking at an extended executive meeting and during interactions with delegations from across the Kashmir Valley and Jammu region, Dr. Naseer emphasized the need to strengthen the Congress at the grassroots. He urged party workers to gear up for the long-overdue Urban Local Bodies (ULB) and Panchayat elections, stressing the importance of early preparation.
