Khumriyal-Wavoora to be ‘strengthened’ within fortnight: R&B responds to SHRC notice

Srinagar, July 10 : After SHRC snub, Roads and Development Department have sought a time period of 15 days to complete the macadamization of Khumriyal-Wavoora road stretch.

On a petition moved by human rights activist Mohammad Ahsan Untoo, the SHRC had sought the report from Chief Engineer alongwith Executive Engineer and Deputy Commissioner Kupwara over the strength of six kilometer Khumriyal-Wavoora road.

“The stretch has been lying in dilapidated conditions with no renovation being carried out for years altogether, Untoo said while adding that there is every chance of any fatal accident.”

Member State Human Rights Commission Abdul Hamid Wani allowed the department’s request, seeking a fortnight to complete the repairs of the road. The matter has been listed for further consideration on August 23.   

“The report from the Chief Engineer alongwith Executive Engineer and Deputy Commissioner Kupwara have been received and is available in the file on record. The report makes comments with the strength up to six kilometers from Khumriyal to Vawoora have been undertaken on war foot basis,” the order reads, adding, “The Assistant Engineer who is present has undertaken that the same will be completed within a fortnight. There is no need to give a copy of communication received from Chief Engineer, Executive Engineer and Deputy Commissioner Kupwara to the complainant as formal discussion has taken place in the light of the documents in his presence. The road stretch extends link of the district headquarter with many vital areas including; Sogam, Diver, Khurhama, Machil, Tekipora and Lolab.
