Mughal road, Srinagar-Leh highway closed after snowfall in Kashmir

Traffic on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh Highway and the historic Mughal road was on Wednesday morning suspended due to slippery road condition, following snowfall.

However, despite rain, traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu NH, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was plying normally.

A traffic police official said that Srinagar-Leh highway, connecting the Union Territory of Ladakh with Kashmir, was closed since early Wednesday morning due to heavy snowfall, since late last night.

“Snow accumulated at Zojila and its adjoining areas, resulting in slippery road conditions,” he said.

Keeping in view the safety and security of passengers, traffic has been suspended on the highway. The Border Road Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has pressed into service machines and men to put the road through for traffic, he added.

He said the 86-km-long Mughal road, which connects Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu, was also closed for traffic due to slippery road conditions, following accumulation of snow at various places.

“District administrations from both the sides have pressed into service machines and men to clear the road for traffic,” he added.

He said traffic on both the roads will be allowed to ply, only after a green signal from traffic police officials deployed at various places on the highway and Mughal road.

But, traffic was plying normally on Srinagar-Jammu NH, despite rain since late last night, he added.(UNI)
