JKSCD denounces ‘harassment’ of doctors by cops

Srinagar May 25: Jammu and Kashmir Society of Consultant Doctors (JKSCD) Monday denounced and expresses deep regret over a series of unfortunate incidents taking place over the course of past few weeks in which doctors– including senior doctors, paramedics and reportedly healthcare professionals of either gender have been harassed and misbehaved by some some police officials while they were on their way to work or in the process of discharging their professional duties, a JKSCD statement said.

The statement said, “We can confirm that some of our colleagues have been harangued, heckled and harassed by some high- headed and biased elements in the police force thereby creating an atmosphere that vitiates and undermines the morale of our healthcare warriors who are under tremendous physical and psychological pressure while dealing with this pandemic.

Besides this, doctors are made to que in long lines meant to chaff off lockdown defaulters- this notwithstanding the fact that these doctors plead their case for allowing easy access but almost always these pleas fall on deaf and indifferent ears.”

The statement said JKSCD, after conveying a virtual meeting chaired by its’ president Dr Maajed Jehangeer and attended by senior functionaries including Dr Masood Rashid and Dr Irfan Shams condemned this behaviour by some black sheep within the force which tantamounts to nothing less than harassment, bitter denunciation and, in some cases physical abuse of our medical fraternity.

“Very recently two worthy members of our profession, senior interventional cardiologist Dr Syed Maqbool and Surgeon specialist Dr Shabir Mir, both working in GMC Srinagar have been the unfortunate victims of this police ire and, in the case of Dr Maqbool, intense wrath and physical manhandling,” the statement said issued to news agency KINS reads.

JKSCD has appeald senior officials of the police especially the IGP Kashmir, to facilitate the smooth working of all healthcare professionals in these trying times and to take strict action against those misguided elements within the police who are bringing discredit and reproach to their community by indulging in such gratuitous acts.

“SCD, along with its’ sister associations will monitor the situation closely and will appreciate an early resolution to the satisfaction of our community,” the statement added.
