Surge in COVID-19 cases: Kashmir to witness chaos, shortage of beds soon, say experts

Srinagar June 5 (KINS): Amid surge in coronavirus cases, experts have predicted there would be shortage of beds and chaos soon in Kashmir.

Over 3200 coronavirus cases have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir and the number increases with each passing day.

Experts have concerned over the surge in COVID-19 cases in view poor health care system in the valley.

Doctors Association Kashmir President Dr Suhail Naik, as per news agency KINS said, “On an average 1 positive has 50 primary contacts.  200 cases per day land 10000 in to administrative quarantine. India spends Rs 2,440 on each person in quarantine centres. Soon we will have shortage of beds, chaos and confusion.”

One of Kashmir’s leading pulmonologists Dr Naveed Shah on Friday asked where are they going to keep COVID-19 patients, their families and contacts.

“So many positives detected each day.. where are we going to keep them… and their families/contacts … do we have to alter our strategy … testing and quarantine,” he Tweeted.

Dr Naveed has also been tested positive for COVID-19.

Experts have been saying that the best way to protect themselves from COVID-19 is by maintaining physical distance of at least 2 metre from others, frequently cleaning hands with an alcohol based hand sanitizer or washing them with soap and water and following good respiratory etiquette and hygiene.

As a measure for social distancing in public places and workplaces wearing a face cover is compulsory.

Early detection of COVID-19 can prevent the spread of disease so we need to be responsible for the well-being of ourselves and everyone around us. “Not disclosing symptoms could put life of individuals and their families at risk. In case of symptoms like fever, cough and difficulty in breathing report early. Do not fear, call COVID-19 helpline numbers and seek medical advice,” a government advisory reads.

Advisory has further exhorted upon the people not to step out of home, unless absolutely necessary. “If you have to move out for unavoidable reasons, ensure that you wear a mask and practice social distancing, personal hygiene and frequent hand washing with soap and water.”

In case of any emergency people can avail free ambulance services 24×7 at their doorsteps by calling on toll-free number 108 while as pregnant women and sick infants can avail free ambulance services by dialling toll-free number 102.
