Army Statement on Operation CHOTIGAM: ‘Neutralization of LeT Terrorist’

Srinagar, Jan 05: Under the operation CHOTIGAM, security forces collaboratively carried out a search operation in Chotigam village, Shopian. This action, initiated based on precise intelligence about a terrorist’s presence, occurred on the night of January 4th and 5th, involving the Army, Police, and CRPF.
As the joint party approached the suspected location, the hiding terrorist opened fire indiscriminately, prompting an effective retaliation and leading to a fierce encounter. The slain terrorist has been identified as Bilal Ahmed Bhat, son of Ghulam Rasool Bhat, a resident of Chek Cholan, affiliated with the proscribed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as per Jammu and Kashmir Police records.
The killed terrorist, Bilal Ahmed Bhat, was implicated in several terror crimes, including the killing of local army personnel Umer Fayaz in Sudsan Kulgam. He was responsible for a grenade attack on non-local laborers in Hermain, resulting in the immediate death of two laborers. Additionally, he was involved in the targeted killing of Kashmiri Pandit Sunil Kumar Bhat and the injury of Pretimber Nath, both residents of Chotigam, Shopian. Other crimes include an attack on local Bal Krishan (Sonu) and instigating local youth to join terrorist ranks, successfully inducing 12 individuals into terrorism. Notably, he was also linked to the killing of an arrested terrorist leading a search party during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) at Nowgam in 2022.
Recovery from the encounter site included incriminating materials, arms, and ammunition, comprising one AK series rifle and three magazines. The operation underscores the continuous efforts of terrorists, supported by Pakistan, to disrupt peace and orchestrate incidents. The security forces remain resolute and committed to thwarting such nefarious designs and ensuring the enduring peace achieved in the region.
