Security situation in Kashmir peaceful, active terrorists down to 80: GOC 15 Corps Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai

Ishtiyaq Kar

Srinagar, Oct 3 (KINS): Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Indian Army’s 15 Corps, stated on Thursday that the number of active terrorists in Kashmir has significantly decreased to around 80.
He expressed optimism that this figure will continue to drop as peace and stability are maintained in the region.
“We have succeeded in bringing the numbers down, and I believe it will continue to decrease. The situation in Kashmir is peaceful, and we are vigilant in guarding the borders,” Lt. Gen. Ghai told reporters in Srinagar, as reported by KINS.
He attributed the progress in counter-terrorism efforts to the joint operations conducted by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and other security agencies. “We have managed to ensure peace and stability, which has led to substantial development in the region,” he said, emphasizing that the Valley is on the brink of a “new beginning.”
Addressing the challenge of infiltration attempts from across the Line of Control (LoC), the GOC highlighted the effectiveness of counter-infiltration strategies. “Infiltration attempts have been kept at bay. This summer, there were no major attempts from the launch pads. We are confident that the numbers will continue to drop,” he noted.
Gen. Ghai also stated that the dwindling number of terrorists in the region is due to a halt in active recruitment over the past year and a half. “The number of terrorists is now negligible. The challenge is to sustain this peaceful situation, and I believe we will succeed in maintaining it,” he remarked.
While acknowledging the improvements in the security situation, Gen. Ghai stressed the need to remain cautious. “Maintaining peace is crucial, and the next few years will be vital. Whether it’s counter-terrorism operations on the LoC or within the Valley, we must stay vigilant,” he said.
Speaking about the Kokernag encounter, in which an Indian Army Colonel and Deputy Superintendent of Police Humayun Bhat were martyred, Gen. Ghai shared that the operation had been progressing until a heavy exchange of fire with the terrorists led to the tragic loss of lives. He noted that the number of foreign militants is estimated to be between 25 and 30 and assured that they will be neutralized soon.
Gen. Ghai also discussed the role of modern technology in counter-insurgency operations, stating, “We have embraced the latest technology, which has enhanced our efficiency in tackling insurgents.”
Reiterating the importance of the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, which was implemented in February 2021, he added, “The ceasefire remains intact, contributing to reduced tensions along the LoC.”
On the issue of narcoterrorism, the GOC expressed concern about drug use among the youth, acknowledging that it poses a significant challenge. “We have a strategy to combat this grave issue, and while the Indian Army cannot address it alone, we are committed to tackling it alongside other initiatives,” he said.
He concluded the briefing with a hopeful outlook, saying, “We are confident that the number of terrorists will continue to decrease and that peace will prevail in Kashmir. The region is moving in a positive direction, and with continued efforts, we will secure long-lasting peace.”(KINS)
