Srinagar, Mar 21 (KINS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday said that the Kashmir Press Club will be revived, emphasizing that all attempts to politicize it will be defeated.
He assured that the Press Club will be led by journalists themselves, calling it a significant step toward strengthening press freedom in the region.
“The Press Club at Srinagar will be revived, and any efforts to politicize it will be strongly resisted. An independent Press Club, managed by journalists, is essential for ensuring press freedom,” Omar said according to news agency KINS.
The announcement comes amid growing calls from the journalist fraternity for the restoration of the Press Club, which has remained non-functional for the past few years. Media professionals in Kashmir have repeatedly stressed the need for an independent body to safeguard journalistic interests and provide a space for professional discourse.
Omar Abdullah’s assurance has been welcomed by journalists, who see it as a positive step toward restoring an important institution. “A free and independent Press Club is crucial for journalists to function without fear or influence. We appreciate the commitment to ensuring its revival in a transparent manner,” said a senior journalist.
The roadmap for re-establishing the Press Club is expected to be developed in consultation with journalists, ensuring that it remains an autonomous and professional body. The move is likely to boost press freedom in Kashmir and provide journalists with a dedicated space for discussions, training sessions, and collaborative work. (KINS)
