J&K Assembly session begins in Srinagar with obituary references; Speaker, CM, LoP and legislators pay tributes to departed leaders across political spectrum

Srinagar, Oct 23 (KINS): The autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly commenced in Srinagar on Thursday with a solemn beginning, as the House paid tributes to several eminent personalities who passed away recently.

The proceedings began with obituary references, setting a tone of remembrance and respect for leaders who made invaluable contributions to the political and social fabric of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS), Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather led the House in offering condolences, recalling the legacy and service of the departed leaders.

The Speaker made references to the demise of Satya Pal Malik, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir; Gulchain Singh Charak, former Minister; Dina Nath Bhagat, former MLA; Ghulam Nabi Shaheen, former MLC; Ramesh Arora, former MLC; Sardar Mohammad Akhlaq Khan, former MLC; and Mohammad Sultan Pandithpori, former Legislator.

Paying homage, the Speaker highlighted their dedication to public service and their unwavering commitment to the welfare and progress of the people. “They upheld the values of democracy, strengthened the institution of the Assembly, and worked selflessly for the betterment of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, and several senior legislators from both the ruling and opposition benches also joined in expressing their condolences.

They remembered the late leaders for their political vision, grassroots connect, and tireless efforts to serve the people across different regions and communities of the Union Territory.

Members cutting across party lines observed silence as a mark of respect for the departed souls. The Speaker, on behalf of the House, also extended sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace to the departed.

With the completion of obituary references, the House adjourned for the day, marking the traditional opening of the session before taking up legislative business in the coming days.(KINS)
